Her eyes lit up with a smile, and you can see a hint of wonder in them. She looks at the cake with amazement. She wants to explore, and her tiny fists get ready to do the honour. Smash goes the fist, and her hands are smeared in cream. She happily licks her fingers with a smile of satisfaction. Well, that's how we dream of photographing the perfect cake smash session. Sometimes, they do happen, and we are so satisfied with the result, like what happened with Eden Conway.
Cake smash photography – the pleasant memories
We are into family photography and get plenty of assignments related to kids, and cake smash is one of these. This is the latest trend in celebrating kids' birthdays. Smashing cakes is messy, but when infants do it, we drool over them. Cake smash shoots have become popular with young parents who want to chronicle the way kids react when they see a cake for the first time.
Usually, the parents book a cake smash shoot a month or a few weeks before the first birthday of their munchkins and use the photos to create invitation cards or as a birthday decoration theme.
Whatever be the case, shooting a cake smashing session is both fun and challenging for us. We love to see the kids' reactions, some of them get super excited and plunge into the cake, while some show suspicion and cautiously approach it. Behind the camera, we wait for that moment when the eyes sparkle with amazement, a smile breaks out, and the kids taste a cake for the first time.
It's a tough job, as you can imagine, capturing all the myriad expressions without disturbing the sweeties as they are busy in their discovery.
Each shot taken during a cake smash session has many stories behind it, like Eden's snaps. Let's share them with you.
Eden is a perfect angel. She looks so pretty with her blue eyes and innocent smile. Her mum, Sean, contacted us to book a session with her. We discussed what props to use so that they match Eden's attire and mood.
Eden wore a lovely pink tutu skirt with a white top. The pink hairband with a bow made her look so elegant! Since her name was written on the back, we decided to let her introduce herself in the album. So, here goes the first shot of her, busy exploring the props with her back to the camera.
We had chosen flowers and ribbons to decorate the set. It was minimal but very tasteful. Eden was so intrigued with the cake that she smashed it at one go with a big smile on her face. Thankfully, we didn't miss that precious moment. As you can see her in the photo, gleefully digging her fingers in the cake.
Here comes the big moment. Eden tasted the cake! With her face smeared in cream and frost, she looked longingly at the camera. We took a close shot to highlight her angelic expression.
It was time to clean up, and Eden happily got into the tub we had designed for her. She played with her toys and gave such cute expressions – that's how we completed her bathtub photography. She was spreading cheer and joy in her white and yellow checked cap just like a sunflower.
The final shot. We created this setting to match her outfit. Pink wall, baby pink blanket, and lots of balloons – that was the perfect backdrop to declare that she has turned one. Her jubilance rubbed on us too.
We loved to capture these beautiful moments with Eden.
From Glasgow Family Photography, we wish her a happy birthday.
